Almost all the shoes I own end up like this, with the outer side of my heels surrendering to friction. I think it’s the way I land on my heels when I walk. It might be the way I tend to balance myself on the outer side of my feet when I stand, too. It’s a bad habit that’s surprisingly really hard to break.
